in dana bash on capitol hill. when you think about it, both sides are not happy with what's taking place, at least what they're talking about. i know you have some new information on at least what the republicans are suggesting when it comes to those massive spending cuts, some kind of delay in the process. how would that work? >> reporter: well, this is according to democratic sources. i want to be clear. congressional democratic sources saying that republicans specifically mitch mcconnell who is the lead negotiator, what he is proposing is to delay that sequester, the spending cuts for three months, so 90 days. what democrats here on capitol hill want to do is delay it for at least a year. so there is a very interesting dynamic shaping up right now. this probably is a good illustration of that. you you mentioned right at the top that the negotiations are going on now between primarily senate republican leader and the vice president, not the democratic leader. so they're certainly in the loop i'm told in a very constant way, the democrats here on capitol hill. but the fact that they let

should try checking in with dana bash. she will have the first word on that. >> let's go to dana bash right now. first of all, the reaction to the president's remarks. we heard some biting criticism that the president was inappropriate in saying what he said at this sensitive moment. >> reporter: that's right. i'll get to that in one second. to answer your question, we don't know yet about the senate, but we do have a little bit of news that jessica alluded to, and that is the house will break tonight. we reported earlier this is likely. now it's official. the house will break tonight, new year's eve, december 31st, the night of the fiscal cliff, without voting on the fiscal cliff package. they're going to likely come in, if there's something to vote on tomorrow, and vote on it then. this is a procedural reason because they just don't have anything to vote on. it's also politically advantageous because house republicans and democrats are now going to be able to vote on effectively a tax cut, not a tax increase, because taxes go up january 1st. i think the best way to answer is by tell

. dana bash joins us now from capitol hill. chief white house correspondent jessica yellin on the north lawn tonight. dana, i'll start with you. you listened to big talk on the intro. today was finger pointing and political chicken, but both sides will be talking to each other tomorrow instead of at each other. what is the latest on that? >> that's right, they're going to all be going to the white house. when i say all, i mean the top four congressional leaders, democrats and republicans, to sit down with the president. i'm told by a senior democratic source here in the senate that the expectation is if they can't figure out a path forward over the next three days in this meeting tomorrow, a way to actually pass something to avertthe fiscal cliff, then it is very likely, almost definite, that we will go over the cliff. i have to tell you that sources in both parties think that's the likelihood at this point anyway, but this meeting tomorrow is absolutely going to be crucial. and what the senate republican leader mitch mcconnell who you just heard from there, what he's saying he hopes to

, they can vote no. >> we're following the last-minute drama to avoid anything bad happening here. dana bash is covering the urgent talks in washington. ali velshi gives us the bottom li line. and alison kosik is on wall street watching how worried investors are reacting this hour. dana, we want to begin with you. we are hearing there might have been some progress overnight. >> a lot more optimism being expressed from sources in both parties. mitch mcconnell who the prime negotiator on the republican side just moments ago told reporters he spoke to the vice president, who is the prime negotiator now on the democrat side. so not totally all night, but they were up pretty late and early into the morning going back and forth making what again several sources say was significant progress. again, hate to say it, i have seen that movie before. i know you have too in covering similar negotiations like this. this is really, really been a roller coaster with people feeling optimistic and suddenly we hear things hit a snag. as you said, 14 hours to go. there's nothing like a deadline that really pushe

, what we want to do now is go over to capitol hill and talk to dana bash just a little bit because as we know, when these big deals among leadership get announced, there is still the active job of selling it to the rank and file, both the democrats and the republicans, and, dana, i'll ask you directly, are you hearing from anyone who is saying anything about whether this thing will fly in the house and the senate? >> reporter: obviously it will start in the senate, that's where we'll first see if the votes are there. as i was saying to wolf before, it is very hard to imagine at this late day and this late hour that harry reid and mitch mcconnell will agree to anything that won't get a majority of votes in both of their caucuses. but then the next move is obviously going to be the house, which is where i am right now. i'm with a republican member of the house, darrell issa. thank you for joining us. can you react to what the president said? >> i think i'm pleased there may be a deal, bring some certainty to the american people. i'm disappointed that the president took the eve of what migh
